Arguments for
- The direct, first-person experience of deliberating and then choosing is among the most immediate data we have, and a theory that dismisses it entirely owes a very strong explanation.
- We hold people morally and legally responsible, and the entire practice of praise, blame, and reform assumes they could have acted otherwise.
- Even if the brain is physical, higher-level agency can be real in the way that "software" is real without violating physics — freedom may be a property of whole persons, not particles.
- Quantum indeterminacy shows the universe is not strictly predetermined, leaving room for outcomes that are not fixed in advance.
Arguments against
- Every choice is the output of prior brain states, which are themselves caused by genes, environment, and physics the agent never selected.
- Experiments have detected neural signatures of a decision before the person reports consciously making it, suggesting the felt "choice" is a narration after the fact.
- Random quantum events would make actions arbitrary, not free — randomness is no more "up to us" than determinism is.
- The strong sense of authorship can be explained as a useful illusion the brain constructs, which would feel identical whether or not it were true.
